Routine Eye Care Can Save Your Eyesight
Because many eye diseases can cause vision loss and often progress with no early warning signs, eye exams are crucial tools for detecting and diagnosing them before they can cause complications and even blindness. At Total Vision in Rancho Bernardo, our eye exams use advanced diagnostic technology and trusted techniques to detect the earliest signs of eye disease for patients of all ages. Whether you’re over 65 or brand new to the world, our goal is to help you maintain strong, healthy eyes.
Common Eye Diseases
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. There are many different types, some of which are related to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), but some that develop even though IOP remains normal.
Glaucoma can occur at any age, but it’s most common in older adults. And it’s one of the leading causes of blindness in patients over 60.
Many types of glaucoma develop so gradually that symptoms aren’t noticeable until the disease is in an advanced stage, when extensive damage has occurred. That’s why glaucoma testing is included in every comprehensive eye exam at Total Vision.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the gradual breakdown of the macula, the central-most part of the retina. As the name suggested, AMD is part of the natural aging process, occurring slowly over time. It’s one of the leading causes of blindness in patients over 50.
The macula is responsible for sharp, detailed, straight-ahead vision. Damage to it causes central vision loss, making it difficult to drive, read, write, or recognize faces.
Cataracts
Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. Seeing through a cataract can be a lot like looking through frosted glass.
Cataracts occur as part of the natural aging process, developing slowly over time. Mild cataracts can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, but as they progress, they may need surgery to remove them.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane covering the eyes and inner eyelids. It’s commonly known as “pink eye” because the inflamed blood vessels make the eye turn red.
There are several kinds of conjunctivitis, each with irritating symptoms. Most commonly, conjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial or viral infection, making it highly contagious. Treatment depends on the type of conjunctivitis you have, so if you have symptoms like red eyes, irritated or itchy eyes, or eye discharge, call us immediately.
